Laura Plantation
St Joseph's Plantation
Mississippi
Oak Alley Plantation
We were going to go into New Orleans today. We were going to drive down to where we could catch the streetcar into the French Quarter. However, when we got down to where we were supposed to leave the truck ... we just didn't feel comfortable parking the truck and leaving it there. So....
We decided to go up the River Road and visit some old plantation houses. There are 34 plantation houses on the River Roads (East and West) between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. I wanted to see Oak Alley Plantation. It has 38 huge old live oaks out in front of it. They think that the trees are about 300 years old. We decided to not go on the tour there but just took pictures from the outside. We then backtracked to Laura Plantation. It is an old Creole house which is different from the "Gone with the Wind" plantation look. The whole creole culture was very interesting to learn about. In that culture, whatever child was the most intelligent or most talented would inherit the plantation instead of the eldest son getting everything. That person was then responsible for supporting all of the family with the family business.
Anyway, it was a nice day even if it didn't go exactly as planned. We have our names down for the park shuttle into town for tomorrow and Sunday. They are supposed to have an amazing Easter parade downtown on Sunday.
